Established on July 26th, 2010, Tai Calon Community Housing is a not-for-profit organisation and the largest provider of homes in Blaenau Gwent, managing over 6,000 homes.
As a cornerstone of the community, Tai Calon employs more than 280 staff and collects over £31 million annually in social rent to maintain and improve its homes and services.
Since its inception, Tai Calon has invested over £243 million to ensure its homes meet and exceed the Welsh Housing Quality Standard (WHQS). This significant investment reflects the organisation’s commitment to providing safe, comfortable, and modern housing for all its residents.
Tai Calon also manages 16 non-traditional house types, ranging from steel-framed Arcal houses in Abertillery to Dorlonco homes in Nantyglo. These homes, built under the stewardship of Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council and its predecessors, showcase a history of architectural innovation and adaptation. Some have undergone extensive renovations to improve energy efficiency and extend their lifespan, reflecting Tai Calon’s focus on sustainability and preserving the unique housing legacy of the region.
In addition to its distinctive housing portfolio, Tai Calon is proud to steward some of the largest green spaces and woodlands managed by any housing association in Wales. These green spaces not only enhance the natural beauty of Blaenau Gwent but also provide vital opportunities for recreation, biodiversity and improving residents’ well-being.
The organisation’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing these areas reflects its dedication to creating thriving, sustainable communities that value both people and the environment
Our Vision, Mission & Values
Our vision (why we exist), mission (what we will achieve) and values (how we will achieve it) reflect our promise to support tenants, their families and neighbourhoods.
Our Vision
“Tai Calon exists to inspire its people so that they go beyond affordable housing and are driven to create vibrant communities across Blaenau Gwent.”
Our Mission
By 2025, over 90% of Tai Calon tenants will be satisfied, or very satisfied, with the overall service that they receive.
That overall satisfaction in 2025 will also reflect tenants’ opinions on:
The quality of their home; including the planned and significant improvement in its environmental efficiency, such that the average energy efficiency measure for all Tai Calon homes is 85 (as measured by the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP), and;
The perception of their neighbourhood, which is informed by some of the 200 new homes to be re-developed by Tai Calon across the county.
Our CALON Values are:
- Creative
- Authentic
- Learning
- Ownership
- Not on your own
